The time they spend together training provides an amazing and lifelong bond that goes beyond their vows. It provides the time for Anh and Jay to “be together” outside of the daily struggles of work and being a parent. Jay is living proof that in our modern society, it is possible to balance fitness goals, a challenging career, a loving marriage, and raising his one year old daughter, Alexandra.
Jay is also an avid BlackBerry user, who uses his Storm and Gym Technik at the gym. Jay will be sharing fitness advice about his fitness lifestyle, and preparing his body for competition shape. We will be constantly updating his profile with new pictures leading up to the competition and be sure to follow his and his wife's personal stories and progress through TheMuscleCouple.com.
In Jay's Own Words
When I graduated college in 1993, I was skinny and 177 pounds. I was scrawny with very little muscle. I was nowhere close to having the body I possess today. I started reading about Training and Nutrition my Junior and Senior years of College when a good friend turned me on to Muscle Magazines. I fell in love with the “science of working out” and began to apply my knowledge to building a bigger-stronger and better body. I was fascinated with the physiques of Arnold Schwarznegger and Frank Zane. I thought if I worked hard and smart enough, I could build a body like theirs. I had no idea the dedication, time and effort needed to build a champion physique. I was about to find out. I moved to CA within a year after graduation and quickly embraced the exercise scene and culture. I became a personal trainer certified thru A.C.E. and also studied for my CSCS with the National Strength and Conditioning Association.(NSCA) I was a trainer at Golds Gym Pasadena for 8 years (from 1999 thru 2007).
It was during this time of being a trainer and working with multiple people from various fitness levels, I began to learn what worked. I took this knowledge and did my best to apply it in creating training programs for both clients and myself. Exercise Science is a very complex field and few can become an expert without a lot of trial and error. I like to think I’m still improving my body everyday as the learning process never stops. I’m always reading and researching whenever I have a spare moment. My workout creedo is one I stole from the famous exercise physiologist Charles Staley (Hi Charles) “The Very Best Workout is the One You’re Currently Not Doing”. The human body is an amazing and complex organism that adapts to any type of training stimulus in time. The best way to continue to improve and refine it is to always change your programs. From varying your sets, reps, intensities, rest intervals, time under tension to periodized splits and full body training, the permutations to continually force your body to adapt are limitless. I don’t normally subscribe to any specific training modality other than I change programs religiously every 6 weeks. My programs are based on 3 phases of two weeks each. Sometimes I will train a body part twice every 8 days and sometimes only once.
If I was asked to give advice to a young lifter today, the difference between building an awesome and award winning physique from an average one is consistency of effort. Not just in your training but in your diet as well. You absolutely can’t build a nice body until you commit to making fitness and nutrition your lifestyle. It can’t be “on again-off again”. It’s taken me 19 years of hard work and practical application to build the body I have today. There are no shortcuts. Even drugs and supplements are only adjuncts. Without hard-continual focused training and nutrition, you will never attain the body you want.
