How to get rid of that gut

Published on 23 Jun 2009 by Sonya Gill
This is a question I get time and time again.

Every female client I have ever trained always poses the, "I want to get rid of this", as they grab onto their stomach's.. as if maybe they grab a little harder, it may just come off like dough...thank God for wishful thinking right;)

Here's the thing...its not just going to come off "like that"..and all those commercials you watch that promise you instant abs...like that ab belt for example..they are also not going to help get rid of the flab on your abs, unless of course you have no flab.

So, I'm going to fill you in, just like I fill in my clients I train....

  1. You have to expend more calories than you consume. So for example, if you burn 600-800 calories at the gym (yes, this is very possible and very do-able), and you are on a 1200 calorie diet, you are well on your way to a new and improved body. Also take into consideration how much you walk (outside of the gym), if you have any kids, how much you run after them, how much sex you have, how much you dance at parties etc...this is all calorie expenditure.

  2. Stay away from sweets, and salts. If you aren't ready to tear yourself away from that chocolate bar, brownie, or chips, than there's not much I can do to help you. However, if you can promise me, and yourself, that you will eat as organically as possible, you can move on to number 3...

  3. When people usually ask me how to get a flat stomach, I always say, RUN. Literally. I mean it. Running is by far the best cardiovascular exercise for your body. Not only does it condition your body overall, but if you can contract your abs while your running, I promise you that you will come to see a difference within a couple of weeks (maybe even in a couple of days), you'll begin to notice a difference in your love handles (I would like to meet the person who gave them this term), and you'll begin to notice how your stomach starts to shrink. And just a side note, keep in mind that your body doesn't begin to burn fat until after 20 mins, so ideally, aim to run for 30 mins 3 times a week for starters if you can...

  4. And finally...here's where ab exercises come in. Sit ups on the ball, leg lifts on the floor, or standard sit ups...if you don't build muscle, you won't burn fat. So don't forget to sculpt those abs that are just waiting to come out and show off...;)
Other than that...let me know how it goes:)
